Ahupe Ghat is a little known destination for hiking making it isolated & attractive. Nestled between the fluted ridges of Malshej Ghat & Bhimashankar, the approach to this mountain is a 3-4Hrs walk through paddy fields, streams, a thick forest, culminating in a climb over the top to the beautiful plateau of Ahupe.
One almost wonders how this route remains hidden, yet is so accessible. This erstwhile trade route between Mhasa & Ghodegaon is till date used by locals to access weekly markets. And, how they enjoy the views of nearby peaks, the forest walk & the excitement to look down upon earthy creatures. After all real hiking is not for the luxurious mind.
Ahupe on the mountain-top neighbours the Bhimashankar forests making it very quaint village, much happy with its own excess. Our presence just seems to punctuate their way of life, though the folks here are used to a visit of the rare hikers.
The edge of the range overlooks a fabulous ridge we skirted on our way up, a jigsaw of green & brown paddy that are covered with the fluff of soft clouds. The twin peaks of Gorakh & Machchindragad play hide & seek amongst the clouds as also the waterfall into an adjacent valley is at its spectacular best in steady rains.
We stay either in the village school or even at some local home, tasting some yummy meal of Zunka-Bhakar or Pithla-Bhakari. If the weather & terrain looks great we may even decide to pitch some tents & live life in the open while doing our own cooking.
Sunday is dedicated to exploring the plateau & walking down the ghat, relaxed & at an easy pace frolicking in the streams that we cross. Lunch is normally at a local restaurant along the way & who does not want to complete the true Indian Monsoon experience with a cup of Chai & some Pakodas.
